Pattaya’s new Wombats club will host the first ever 10s rugby league tournament in the nation on October 12th-13th, 2013, with some 200,000 baht (AUD6,650) in prize money.
The tournament will be held at the Horseshoe Point Resort which has been totally renovated for the competition and has recently upgraded its pitch and facilities. Horseshoe Point is just ten minutes’ drive from Pattaya and one hour from Bangkok’s main international airport.
There will be an open tournament for men and a junior division for those under 15, sponsored by Kingdom Properties. There will be 16 teams in the main tournament. The Thai Barbarians will defend their title against The Southerners, who were narrowly beaten. Former champions Thai Legends will also be back, as well as newcomers Wat Sri Racha Old Boys.
Eight teams will compete in the knockout cup including five teams expected from overseas – “New Zealand, Australia, UK or anywhere,” said Greg. “The other three are from Thailand- one all-expats, another our own Barbarian Wombat side and one full Thai team – for that local flavour”.
At a press conference at the Amari Orchid Pattaya it was announced that the next annual Pattaya rugby tournament will be renamed the Amari Orchid Kays Memorial Tournament in memory of the former Pattaya Panthers’ captain killed in the 2002 Bali bombing.
